ChARM is the venture that will bring a battery-powered breathing rate monitor ( CE class IIa medical device ), designed to help with the diagnosis of pneumonia and reduce childhood deaths caused by pneumonia. The ChARM provides quantitative feedback on breathing rate and qualitative feedback to the healthcare provider based on the World Health Organization’s IMCI (Integrated Management of Childhood Illness) guidelines to diagnose fast breathing rates, one of the key vital signs to diagnosing pneumonia. The device is accuratet ( +- 2 breaths ), dust-proof, water resistant (IP54), and can be used in extreme temperatures. The ChARM will enable health workers that reach 10’s of millions children to diagnose correctly, making it possible to provide low cost medication and saving potentially 1Mio childrens lives per year. Additionally it improves the rationalisation of the use of anti-biotics and is one of the key elements to fight antibiotic resistance (ARM), which is one of the most urgent threads to global health.
